College Profile
Cann River is located 450 kms east of Melbourne. It has a population of approximately three hundred people. The dominant industries in the area are timber, tourism, service industries and farming.
It is very close to the Croajingolong National Park; Coopracambra National Park is located north of Cann River. These national parks as well as the surrounding State Forest are outstanding recreation areas and provide an excellent resource for education.
The College’s population has varied from 77 to 60 over the last six years. Cann River P-12 College caters for students from Preps to Year 12. Year Level groupings of students at the school are: Prep and Yr 1, Yr2/Yr 3 and 4, Yr 5 and 6, Yr 7 and 8, Yr 9 and 10, Yr 11 and 12.
The College offers a broad curriculum offering including VCE and VET programs, there opportunities for Year 10 students to undertake VCE and VET units. A number of teachers teach both in the primary and secondary sectors of the school. Students at the College enjoy small class sizes and a high degree of individual attention.
The school is very much part of the community, it has a strong instrumental music program and holds a number of concerts through out the year. Events such as The Biggest Morning Tea, Remembrance Day, Anzac Day, House and Interschool Sports, dress as a Book Character, Melbourne Cup activities and the school concert are important school-community interactive occasions.
The College is well resourced; it has extensive grounds, play areas and a farm. The College is also extremely well resourced with computers.
The College is part of the Far East Gippsland Cluster and has recently been involved in three major curriculum incentives:
- Innovations and Excellence Program – the focus of this program was to embed “Thinking” oriented curriculum into teaching and learning practices.
- Lead Schools Fund – the focus of this program was to develop best practice teaching and student curriculum based on the expansion of an ICT rich curriculum.
- Building Innovation Fund – the focus of this program was on the use of technology to create learning opportunities via videoconferencing and electronic whiteboards.
